Santa’s Workshop

These are the tools I use when I’m making a crossword. Eventually I’ll write a full guide, but for now I hope this list will suffice. If you have additional questions, need a helping hand, or have a resource you think I should add, send me a message. I’m always looking to collaborate and spread the joys of puzzle-making.
Basics
- Ingrid: Hands down the best construction software out there. Others exist but this is all you need. I wouldn't recommend using a browser-based tool.
- Ugleh Gridsearch: Search through grid shapes that have already been published. You can put in a couple of theme answers and see shapes that will work with them.
- Crossword Tracker: Look for clue ideas, or check whether anyone has ever used your terrible fill before (ignore the warning).
- Crosshare: Upload a puzzle for easy sharing.
- Squares: Alternative uploading site.
Themes & Clue Writing
- OneLook: Word finder and reverse dictionary.
- Qat: Pattern and anagram search.
- Unparalleled Misalignments: A fun list I use occasionally.
Cryptic Specifics
- Chesterley's Cryptic Crosswords: A guide to solving cryptic crosswords. It includes some more types of obscure clues than the guide on this site.
- Crossword Unclued: A dictionary of cryptic crossword terms.
- Wikipedia: Crossword abbreviations. Useful for both solving and constructing!
- Cryptics Wiki: Alternative list of abbreviations.
- Andy's Anagram Solver: My favorite anagram solver, useful for both solving and constructing!
